A Malawian man has been arrested after border officials discovered an explosive cord worth an estimated R100,000 concealed inside luggage aboard a bus traveling from Malawi into South Africa through the Beitbridge Border Post.

The arrest followed a routine inspection conducted by officials from the Border Management Authority (BMA) on Sunday, 28 June.

According to the BMA, the discovery was made at approximately 3:30 p.m. when a border guard became suspicious of a piece of luggage on an Interlink passenger bus entering South Africa. A detailed search of the bag revealed explosive cord carefully hidden inside a bag of rice in an apparent attempt to evade detection.

Authorities immediately secured the scene after confirming that the material was explosive cord, which is classified as an explosive under South African law. The suspect was taken into custody, while the seized explosives were confiscated for further investigation.

The Border Management Authority praised the vigilance of its officers, noting that the seizure highlights the importance of routine inspections in preventing the illegal movement of dangerous materials across South Africa’s borders.

Officials have not yet disclosed the intended destination of the explosive cord or whether the suspect was acting alone. Investigators are expected to determine the origin of the explosives, their intended use, and whether the incident is linked to a broader cross-border criminal network.

The suspect is expected to face charges relating to the unlawful possession and transportation of explosives in contravention of South African legislation. Additional charges may be added as investigations progress.

The BMA reiterated its commitment to strengthening border security and combating transnational crime, emphasizing that border officials remain on high alert to intercept illegal goods and protect public safety.

The investigation remains ongoing.
