Never Drink Water During These Times No Matter How Thirsty You Are

Water is vital for maintaining good health and supporting essential body functions, and for most healthy people, drinking water whenever they feel thirsty is both safe and recommended. Proper hydration helps regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, support digestion, and keep organs functioning efficiently. However, medical experts say there are certain situations in which drinking water should be approached with caution or limited under professional guidance.

One of the most common situations involves patients preparing for surgery or certain medical procedures. Doctors and anaesthetists often instruct patients not to eat or drink, including water, for several hours before an operation. This precaution helps reduce the risk of stomach contents entering the lungs during anaesthesia, a complication that can be life-threatening. Patients are therefore advised to follow their healthcare provider’s fasting instructions carefully.

Another important consideration is the safety of the water itself. Drinking water from contaminated or untreated sources can expose people to dangerous bacteria, viruses, parasites and harmful chemicals that may cause serious illnesses. Health authorities recommend consuming water only from trusted sources. If there is any doubt about its safety, the water should be boiled, filtered or treated using approved purification methods before drinking.

Medical professionals also caution that some individuals may need to restrict their fluid intake because of underlying health conditions. Patients with advanced kidney disease, severe heart failure or certain liver disorders may be advised to limit the amount of water they consume to prevent complications such as fluid overload. In such cases, healthcare providers determine appropriate daily fluid limits based on the patient’s medical condition.

Despite these exceptions, experts emphasise that there is no general rule advising healthy people to avoid drinking water when they are thirsty. Thirst is the body’s natural signal that it needs fluids, and responding to that signal helps maintain proper hydration and overall health.

Individuals who experience persistent thirst, dehydration, swelling or concerns about their fluid intake are encouraged to seek medical advice rather than making significant changes on their own.

Maintaining a healthy balance remains the key message. For most people, drinking clean, safe water regularly is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support overall well-being, while those with specific medical conditions should always follow the guidance provided by qualified healthcare professionals.
