Commander of the Force Intelligence Department–Special Tactical Squad (FID-STS), ACP Victor Ogbeide Godfrey, has revealed that intelligence gathered by police operatives led to the arrest of wanted kidnap kingpin Usman Muhammed Lawani, popularly known as Yellow Lawani, before investigators recovered two AK-47 rifles allegedly linked to him in a forest in Kogi State.

Godfrey disclosed this during an interview on Arise News, on Monday, 22 June, 2026, while explaining the operation that resulted in the arrest of Yellow Lawani and his brother, Abubakar Usman. He said the suspect was intercepted while heading to the airport, after which investigators carried out follow-up operations that led to the recovery of hidden weapons.

Speaking on the development, the police commander said, “We gathered intelligence and on his way to the airport, he was picked. We followed him up and we went to a forest in Kogi where 2 of his AK-47 were recovered.”

Godfrey explained that following the suspect’s arrest, operatives continued their investigation by acting on information obtained during the operation. Their efforts, he said, led them to a forest in Kogi State where two AK-47 rifles allegedly belonging to the suspect were recovered.

According to the FID-STS commander, the recovery of the firearms represents another significant step in the police’s efforts to dismantle criminal networks by depriving them of weapons used in violent crimes.

He noted that the operation demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing, which combines surveillance, timely intervention and follow-up investigations to uncover critical evidence linked to criminal activities.
