An online video of a Somali woman making racist comments about South Africans went viral, and now she has publicly apologised, saying that her comments were misinterpreted and that she wants to speak for all foreign nationals in South Africa when she says this.

Last week, a woman whose identity is being withheld for safety concerns made an appearance in a brief audio in which she was heard insulting inhabitants of South Africa. People from all walks of life, including community leaders, were quick to denounce the video when it went viral on social media; some even went so far as to advocate for her deportation.

But in a statement issued on Tuesday by her lawyer, the woman claimed that everyone has misunderstood her. She clarified that she had never meant for her initial remarks to reflect her genuine feelings for the country that had welcomed her for a number of years; they had been borne of annoyance during a personal argument.

With a heartfelt apology, she spoke up. Both South Africa and its people are just wonderful to me. I am very sorry for the hurt my remarks have caused.

In addition, she apologised on behalf of all foreign nationals living in South Africa, recognising that certain people’s actions can contribute to xenophobic sentiments. Everyone here is honest, dedicated, and looking to make a positive impact. My apologies; I pray that South Africans would not generalise my blunder to all foreigners.

Many people feel differently about her apology. In light of this, some in South Africa have taken it upon themselves to demand unification and a cessation of anti-foreign prejudice. Still others are doubtful, saying that the apology is a reaction to the enormous public outcry that preceded it.

The incident has been noted by the South African Human Rights Commission, which has indicated that it is following the matter. While cautioning against vigilante justice or retaliation, a representative emphasised the need for communication and calm.

There have been no charges filed against the woman as of yet, but immigration experts say she could face a formal complaint under the country’s hate speech laws.
